For decades, only skiers could travel deep into the backcountry. Splitboarding changed all that. Now snowboarders cut their favorite board in half (or acquire a factory cut splitboard) in order to travel, efficiently, in the backcountry. Next, they install one of a number of recently developed binding systems, which magically transform their board into cross-country style skis. Finally, placing skins on the bottom of their boards for traction and using poles, just like skiers, they hike up. An occasional sketchy descent may be attempted, merely to get from one point of ascent to another, but splitboarders seldom ride downhill in ski-mode. This generally ends in a face plant. Instead, they transform their equipment back into a snowboard—and skiers watch in envy as they surf down the mountain, bouncing from one powder roll to the next.
